Protecting Your Children’s Teeth With Dental Sealants

Posted .

It can be difficult for young children to properly care for their teeth. The techniques of brushing and flossing aren’t yet familiar to them. This can lead to cracks and crevices not being cleaned out as well as they should, which is why it’s easy for a child to develop cavities. Thankfully, there is a preventative treatment for your child called a dental sealant that can protect your child’s teeth during this period of their life.

A dental sealant is a plastic resin that is applied to the rear teeth to effectively prevent tooth decay on the molars. Application of a dental sealant is simple. During the treatment, Dr. Jade Cherrington will apply a tooth-colored acrylic resin coating to the grooves in your child’s teeth. This will “seal” the teeth in order to protect them from decay.

The sealed grooves will prevent stray food particles and plaque from getting stuck in between your child’s teeth. This way, when those areas are missed while brushing and flossing, they will still be protected from decay.

The sealant will only take a few minutes for our dentist to apply to your child’s teeth. Dental sealants are highly durable and will last years before a reapplication is needed.
